St. Mary’s Church hosted a tour of the Surrey Lane Estate alongside members of the SLPO. Guests included Councillor Tessa Strickland (St. Mary’s Park Ward), senior officers from Wandsworth Council and people from London Citizens. The aim was to gain an overview of the estate, seeing properties experiencing extreme damp, overcrowding and disrepair, communal areas experiencing urban decay, as well as properties which were more pleasant. Furthermore, people related their personal stories and experiences of living in within the estate with The Reverend Canon Simon Butler and other representatives from St. Mary’s Church.
Eric Gello of SLPO/Gardiner House RA said, “Saturday proved that a united community can achieve better and faster results. The SLPO is beginning to realise her initial agenda of a sense of a safer, just and sustainable environment that all of us co-exist and thrive”.
Canon Simon Butler, Vicar of St Mary’s said, “Members St Mary’s Church, Battersea were delighted to be able to join members of the Surrey Lane People’s Organisation for a tour of the estate. We were touched by the warmth of the welcome we received and the energy and enthusiasm of members of SLPO which is so clearly engaging positively with other residents, Councillors and Officers to effect improvements to life on the Surrey Lane. As a member institution of Wandsworth Citizens, and as the parish church of the Estate, St Mary’s is looking forward to building relationships with SLPO and Surrey Lane residents in the coming years.”
